ABOUT THE PROJECT

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Foundation Care for Natural intends to set up the Aloe Vera Burn Centre for Children (ABCC) (for treatment, training and research) at the village location of Mariamakunda for the treatment of burns of babies, toddlers and infants. This centre is run entirely by local and European volunteers.

The Aloe Vera burn treatment method was developed by Claudette Sarr-Krook, the co-founder of foundation Care for Natural. The treatment of learning and performing is relatively simple and requires no medical background from the person carrying out the treatment. The challenge lies mainly in dealing with and responding to cultural differences. Gambians strongly believe in their own rituals and still have many taboos in their culture. Daily life in Gambia cannot be compared to daily life in the Netherlands and Europe and is mainly characterized by poverty. As a volunteer you have to be well prepared and be able to anticipate well and that can be a major challenge.

The children who come for treatment may be in very poor health. The parents have sometimes treated the children according to local treatment or have waited too long to bring their child to the clinic. This is because, for example, have no money for transport . A local treatment may be smearing the burns with rabbit hair. This can lead to severe fever, inflammation and a lot of pain.

The goal is to treat babies, toddlers and infants in the centre and further develop the treatment method. In addition, we want to spread the knowledge as widely as possible through training and workshops. At the location in Mariamakunda there is a building that functions as a community centre, where various workshops are regularly given on personal hygiene, environmentally friendly agriculture and the use of medicinal plants. This is the centre where the treatments and training are carried out.

At this location is also the ā€œgarden in my heartā€ project of the foundation, where over 20 women have their own garden and can grow their own vegetables for sale or personal use. This must be done in an organic and environmentally friendly way. The gardens are part of a larger piece of land, where other trials are taking place , the Aloe Vera plants are growing, all runs on  solar powered water supplies. The manager comes in daily and the caretaker and his family live at the land, they are always present here.
